Balik-ing kampung

That's us, back home in Kulim. At Chuan's childhood home, with his dad who's 93 this year :)

(Daniyal's not in the pix because he had to work, and didn't travel home with us. He usually has Sundays off, but that Sunday was also Valentine's Day - so it was a big day at the restaurant.)

And this pix comes to you courtesy of my nephew Issac. I pinched it from his page on Facebook!

We'd left at 6 a.m. dreding the worst, but the traffic wasn't too bad, and the journey took only just an hour longer than usual. There were little 'jams' here and there, caused mainly by rubber-neckers! The first jam was just outside Sungai Buloh, and I thought, 'OMG this is the pits! Is it going to be like this for the rest of the journey?'

But no, it was because there was something deemed worth watching on the other side, heading into KL. Know what it was? A bus had stopped to change a tyre, for crying out loud! And apparently, for us, that's a big deal and worth slowing down and ogling at!

As usual, it was a BIG family reunion, and the old house was filled with noise and laughter and food. All good. Did I mention noise? Hahahah! I don't know why, but we all seemed to love screaming at each other all the time!!!

It is always good to go home. And that's because of the people. Chuan's people are good people, and they've always made me feel welcome, and a part of the family. PLUS they look forward to my cakes and biscuits! When the children were younger, I'd make chocolate-chip cookies, or brownies, or a huge chocolate cake - or all of those, and more, at the same time. No matter how much I made, it would all disappear - sometimes, even before Chinese New Year day came around!

This year, I was feeling so lazy - maybe because it has been so blisteringly hot all the time - so I only made them breakfast muffins. An enormous number of them, though, and filled only with good things: bananas, nestum, almonds, and chocolate chips. Hehehe.

Usually, we only manage a once-a-year trek home. Last year, we did it twice, the second time to introduce William to Ah Kong, and the rest of the family there.

I hope, this year, we can make time to visit again, before the next Chinese New Year rolls around.

  2. Hello Walla!

I hope you had a good CNY holiday.

Oooh yes, we are a lovely cosmopolitan bunch - and very Malaysian :)

And I am truly blessed to be able to call them family.

  3. Ah Kong is SO hamsum lah, Pat! Now I know where Chuan gets his looks from! Aiyah, poor Dan! Where is he working now? Never mind lah Dan, susah-susah dahulu, senang-senang kemudian when you become a celebrity chef okay? Larnee is pretty as ever. Must chill out again soon.

Pat, your baked goods are super good and a diet breaker for anyone. I remember your scones, mmmm... even my cats were sitting up and begging for crumbs. I remember your moist chocolate cake with marshmallows studded in them! Oh boy!

Kong Hei Fatt Choy, Pat! Glad you had a good time. I will post my CNY photos and blogpost next week.

  5. E,

Yes lah. I've always thought Ah Kong was very handsome, too! Hahahah! Must have swept Ah Mah off her little feet way back when, eh? ;)

I love to bake and cook - but only for someone who wants to eat the stuff. And when it isn't too hot!

    Just say when . . . .

    Fadhil,

    Thank you, my dear friend!

And, yes, we will make it back again before too long. Dan wants to come along, since he's missed CNY yet again!

Yah lah, you're right: tak payah nak tunggu raya :)

  7. Hellooooooooo, Pakmat!

So nice, wan lah, you and Walla!

I'm always luring unsuspecting victims with my muffins and whatnots, and so far, only a couple of bloggers (Ee Lynn and Zaharan) have bravely taken me up on my offer. MUAHAHAH!

Welcome, and do drop by again. As I will, for sure, at your place!
