Hey! They've got money to burrrrrrn!

The truce ended at 12 midnight. I thought we'd have till then for some peace. It was only 11.30 and we could already hear sporadic fire in the distance. Bastards had no respect for the peace process!
Soon it was nearer. The noise of fighting getting more fierce. And always, it ended with one side or the other throwing a grenade. Boom! Boom! And then it was so deathly quiet, my ears buzzed. But the silence lasted only for a while.
Another moron would open fire. And the battle kept getting closer and closer.
Soon it was upon us. Chuan and I ducked our heads under our pillows, but the sound seemed to be inside our very room! And even though the curtains were drawn, the flashes of light sprawled across the walls, and splayed up on the ceiling.
I swear, two grenades went off so near us, I felt the house shake and the windows rattle. Sweet baby Jesus, please keep us safe!
But the battle raged on. It was already one hour past midnight, and they still had ammo to keep it going . . . .

Yup! That's what it felt like when the Hokkiens in my neighbourhood decided it was time they greeted the new year!

I think they think that all that noise chases out the bad luck, and ushers in the good. I don't know. And neither does my Hokkien Chuan.

I'm thinking they didn't figure on the cursing they'd get from their non-Hokkien brethren.

It's back to square one, my Hokkien friends. Monday was the first day of work for many. And the first day of school. I'm sure as many curses filled the air - as did the fire-crackers!

Sorry guys. You'd best come up with some other way to get rid of the devil, or bad luck, or whatever, eh?! This sure ain't working for you!!!

  1. Dear Pat,
I was up most of the night, comforting my furry ones. Pretty annoyed that the blasting went on for so long. It was like being in a war zone. I hope those sociopaths have scared away their good fortune as well as their bad! It would serve them right for being so obnoxious! And the streets were littered with spent firecracker shells. Who's going to pick up after these idiots then? They've got so much money to burn, I'd like to help them get rid of it faster by robbing them blind!
