How to sharpen your knife with a cup

My friend, Lita, sent me this with the query: Will it work? I wonder!

Even before watching the video, it reminded me of my dad - and how he'd 'prep' his knife before he sliced into anything.

Dad kept our kitchens knives nice and sharp all the time. He used a stone (I think it's called a 'whetstone') and he had a coarse-stoned and smooth-stoned one, and he'd often be sharpening his knives on them, with water.

And so, all our knives were always sharp!

And yet, every time he was about to slice into meat, or even a loaf of bread (dad didn't believe in bread knives, k!), he'd grab a cup, or a plate - and proceeded to sharpen his knife on their bottoms. You'd need one of those that had unglazed bits on their underneaths; that's the bit that works to sharpen the knife.

He'd run his knife over them a couple of times or so, and then he'd be ready to cut whatever-it-was.

Now, Chuan and Dan are in charge of keeping the knives sharp. They work it exactly like dad did.

So, Lita, the answer is: Yes, it will work :)

And here's a video showing exactly what dad did :)

  1. Yup!!! And, most of the time, it works. I guess it came about from trial-and-error. I wish we didn't turn up our noses at these all the time - because sometimes, they're based on real science.

I'm sorry this is such a late reply, dear Ant. Blogger only sent me some comments in my e-mail - and I wasn't sharp enough ;) to go see if there were any awaiting moderation.

    Thanks for visiting. Mwah!
