Linen and lace - for Emily

I took a LONG break for Christmas, and now it's back to my lovely hobby of painting, painting, painting.

I have been busy these past couple of weeks, and what I've been doing is painting linen-and-lace on a lazy-susan for my dear friend, Emily.

Emily, I hope you like this!

The finished lazy susan - at least, the lace-painting bit is finished! Now, it's coat after coat of varnish!

I am not good at tracing patterns. So, I cut holes in the pattern I sort-of free-handed, and then drew in the bits and pieces.
Here it is, all outlined, and the 'linen' bits shaded in - all ready for painting.

The linen bits all done. Now, for the best part: painting on the lace!!

Right now, it has already had about two coats of topcoat. At least a couple more coats are needed. Maybe more.

As you can note from the picture, I did an outline of the lazy-susan's round, and then folded it to get my sectors. From there, I sorta put in where I wanted the 'linen' bits. Then, I cut out these bits, so that I could outline the pattern onto the board, and see what I was doing! I can never simply trace something - I'll usually find that I've left vital bits out, or find a whole chunk of stuff is missing :(

The linen bits are done in watered-down paint. The lace is thick paint. I used water-based acrylic paint for both the background - burnt umber - and titanium white for the linen and lace.

  1. That. Is. Incredible.

Pat! Even if you did trace a pattern, how did you make it look so symmetrical, elaborate and lace-like?

    You have scary skills!

    1. Thank you, dear E! I guess it just fell into place. If you come at it with a magnifying glass and measuring tools, you'd see that not everything is exactly the same size or in the 'right' place.

But, I think that's what my art is all about: I want it to look painted; not a copy of an original; not exactly like a crocheted piece of work. What would be the point of that, no? Better to just go out and get the real thing, then.

Thank you for always being so kind with your praise, dearest E!! xoxo

  2. Great job, Pat! And I mean that by the result, and by the time I guess it took you to finish it. I think Emily will love it!

    1. Fingers crossed, she will! ;)

And you are right - this is one about time. And about sleeping enough and having a steady hand, and a focused mind! Just let things stray for a moment, and you've painted something where it cannot possibly be! Hahahaha!!!

      Thanks so much, Kristina! xoxo

  3. This is absolutely beautiful mum! I'm sure she will like it. It looks like real lace! Such a good idea too... cos real lace will stain/ yellow with time.
